The Department of Algebra (Katedra algebry) is in charge of most algebraic lectures at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the Charles University (MFF UK). The department is a center of research in the following areas of contemporary mathenatics: homological algebra, universal algebra and theoretical computer science, associative algebras and modules, groups and binary systems.

Libor Barto, a member of the department, is the principal investigator of ERC Consolidator Grant (ERC CoG), No. 771005, "Symmetry in Computational Complexity" funded by the European Research Council (ERC).

The department coordinates one doctoral study programme:

• Algebra, Number Theory, and Mathematical Logic,

two master study programmes:

• Mathematical Structures,
• Mathematics for Information Technologies.

and two bachelor study programmes:

• Mathematics for Information Technologies,
• General Mathematics (Specialization: Mathematical Structures).
